Our client who are specialist sub-contractors who manufacture, design and install Solar shading products, ie Louvres and Brise Soleil, due to growth are looking for a Project Designer to join their established team in the Gloucester region.
Main Function of Job:
Develop a working design for the project in compliance with the Estimate (or suggest an alternative that will obtain approval) with full consideration for CDM regulations. Obtain necessary approvals.
Generate production and fitting requirements whilst working within the defined programme and the original cost estimate for the project. Liasing with contractors and architects and offering advice on the best products for the purpose required.
Tools and Equipment Used:
AutoCAD 2016 LT, Microsoft Word for Windows, Excel, File Maker, Revit, Inventor and email.
A good standard of education to include a top grade in GCSE English and Maths. An HND in Engineering would be useful, as would a qualification in surveying.
Duties and Responsibilities:
·Ensure a detailed and accurate handover from sales (in conjunction with Design Manager)
·Liase with the Structural Engineer as required to resolve design issues.
·Prepare drawings for approval and chase approval (through the Project Manager) if not received in reasonable time.
·Highlight any design changes and ensure they are re-costed.
·Prepare manufacturing details, shop assembly drawings and installation drawings/instructions.
·Prepare Risk Assessments, Method Statements, Health and Safety documents etc (in conjunction with Project Manager)
·Assist in preparation of O&M manuals in conjunction with the Project Manager
·Keep the design file up to date at all times and in date order.
·Attend to all design related faxes within 24 hours of receipt. (This does not mean all issues will be resolved in this time however the client must be kept updated at all times)
·Keep the Contracts Manager, Project Manager and Q.S (as appropriate) informed of any issues, which may affect the programme or have a financial impact.
·Never accept verbal instruction – confirm everything in writing.
·Maintain a Day Book, recording all key events and issues during the entire life of the project providing a record for a later date if required (for disputes)
·Provide accurate reports on the state of all jobs to the relevant Project Manager for the purpose of the progress meetings on a weekly or as necessary basis.
·Manage workload to achieve all design deadline required to meet programme dates.
Specific Duties of The Project Designer Comprise:
·Sales Support on a technical basis and attending post contract design meetings as required.
·The accurate and detailed handover from sales (also Project Manager or Senior Contracts Manager)
·Site Surveys taking dimensions and checking against estimates or establishment of sizes from curtain walling construction drawings.
·Liaison with outside Structural Engineers to obtain structural design input as required
And to ensure design actually works and adheres to British Standards as appropriate.
·Preparation of general layout drawings as required. Submit for approval –chase approvals. Respond to comments raised to achieve A and B status.
·Prototype building and testing if required – for the project and allowed for in costings.
·The highlighting of design issues which might affect programme costings.
·Involving estimating (through the Project Manager) when client led design changes occur. This applies to all types of changes.
·The production of manufacturing details for Procurement.
·Getting drawings checked by another Project Designer to avoid errors going through to Production.
·The raising of orders with Procurement, or forwarding information to Procurement to allow them to order. (Progress chasing to be done by Project Managers)
·In particular, the Project Designer is responsible for making sure that costs allowed by estimating are put on procurement requisition order to allow procurement to purchase well within budget.
·The preparation of shop assembly drawings, and installation drawings and providing instructions for the fitting team.
·Assist in the preparation of Risk Assessments, Method Statements and Health & Safety procedures (working closely with the Project Manager) and dealing with CDM issues.
·Ensuring the timely consideration and completion of CDM documentation.
·Attending site on first visit to brief fitters, and pass on specific design/installation information.
The ideal candidate will have relevant Construction design experience ideally within the external facade industry. Candidates who have worked in a manufacturing environment previously are also preferred.
Salaries are dependent upon level of relevant experience.
